Walking into our Amazon Gallery, you are likely to quickly spot 5 brilliantly red, long-beaked and long-legged birds in the trees, on the ground, or in shallow water. These are scarlet ibis.

As red wading birds, they are frequently mistaken for flamingos, though they are not closely related to those more famous birds. Exactly where the ibis sits in the tree of life has been debated, but they are currently considered to be part of the same group as pelicans and heron.

Just like flamingos, scarlet ibis get their red coloration from the food that they eat. Their bodies take pigments from their prey, such as small crustaceans, and uses that to create the stunning plumage you see.

Go fly by the Amazon Gallery to find them.
